Career Program Area

Goals

The Equine Specialist Career Program Area is designed to:

  • Encourage the development of opportunities in the equine production and marketing industry
  • Provides incentives to develop and improve curricular and instructional techniques.
  • Evaluate participant and program efficiency.
  • Recognize individual accomplishments and educations curriculum in the equine science industry.
  • Encourage cooperation between education and industry.
  • Strengthen the PAS organization by encouraging active participation.

Procedures

1. The objective of this award program is to evaluate the proficiency level of students interested in equine in the following ways:

  • Written examination
  • Identification of parts of a horse
  • Problem-solving

2. Subject matter areas:

  • Behavior & Nature
  • Anatomy -. Action
  • Unsoundness, Blemishes, Age
  • Reproduction
  • Inheritance
  • Digestive System
  • Nutrition
  • Health, Disease, Parasites
  • Truck — Trailering

3. Career program area times schedule will be based on the following:

  • Written examination 1 hour
  • Identification of parts of a horse and tack 30 minutes
  • Problem-solving 1 hour

4. Each participant will be evaluated on performance in each of the three activity areas:

  • Written examination 100 points (individual)
  • Identification 100 points (individual)
  • Problem-solving 100 points (individual)
  • Total 300 points

General Rules

Participants will be eligible to compete in one Specialist Area only per year. No participant shall be allowed to compete in more than one specialist area.

All career program areas requiring tests will be written by a non-affiliated representative or the test will be administered by certification representatives if available. Power to select representatives will be under the direction of the executive director.

All graded tests will be returned to participants or an answer key will be provided for them to use as learning tools, unless it is prohibited by an association or organization. All announced results are final. All returnable information will be given back in chapter packets at conclusion of national conference.

Five points will be deducted from participants who do not bring required materials to their career program area event. Please read CPA specific rules for materials needed. Calculators will no longer be provided; it will be the responsibility of participant to be prepared at the event.

Participants are required to write a general un-sealed thank you letter to the career program area sponsors for the Equine Specialist event. Thank you letters are to be submitted to the Equine Specialist coordinators by the beginning of their competition. In the event that a thank you letter was not submitted, it would disqualify the participant from the event, If possible, write thank you letters on local or state PAS stationary. Therefore, participants will be responsible for their own thank you stationery and their writing utensils.

Equine Specialist Specific Rules

  1. The participants will compete individually.
  2. In the event of a tie in or individual scores, three questions will be identified in advance as tiebreakers. Participants will provide calculator and pencil with erasers. Career program area coordinator will supply charts.
